- Waitress – Great movie includes a line that I think I will steal if I ever need to have surgery (or intensive medical procedures) “I want drugs. I want massive amounts of dtugs. I want the maximum legal limits of drugs.” Plus how can you not love a movie about a woman with a gift for making & naming pies (“Mermaid Marshmallow”)? A very satisfying ending.
- Graeters Black Raspberry Chip ice cream : You can only get this French pot ice cream in Ohio, Kentucky and now Denver (King Soopers?). Every pint packed by hand, though have spent many a fun summer night in line at one of their locations in Columbus. Many wonderful flavors including some fun seasonal ones (peppermint!), this one is my favorite. Liquid chocolate is poured in as the ice cream is finishing and broken up in chunks once frozen. This is not for the “lite” ice cream fan, it’s creamy & rich, cited by NY Times as better than factory made premium brands like Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s (more expensive too).
- Hanging with my “donut” – My pal Wendy’s oldest daughter, now a big sister to “Mac”. Always fun and challenging, a while back she started calling people “donut”, as in “you’re a donut”, and she’s kept it up with me so I say it back to her. Very interesting hearing a 4 year old tell you about her dream last night and then asking you to watch her run around a coffee table for no particular reason (multiple times).
- “F**k You” by Lily Allen – as most of you know, I’m a fan of the F-word and fluent in it's use. Not sure why I’m not spelling it out now or why iTunes felt the need to * parts of it. Happy little tune with a message and always enjoy that contrast. “You’re just some racist who can’t tie my laces”
- The Motorcycle Diaries (movie) – Stunning movie about a young Che Guevara’s road trip through South America. He sees so much beauty as well as poverty & suffering. Certainly a key part of his life that contributed to his political leanings and his future actions. No matter what he did later (freedom fighter or terrorist?), it demonstrates what spurs someone on to be a revolutionary. Based on his journals, part of which I’ll probably read some day.
- Sneezing - Let it go, let it rocket you backward, feel the release, don't bring it up short. Hot damn, it feels good. (totally stole this entire entry from McSweeney’s)
- Raul Malo – know by most as the lead singer of the Mavericks. Usually classified in country though has explored his latin roots and some classics. Probably the vocal heir to Roy Orbison. I’m a fool for covers, particular his version of “Cold, Cold Heart”, “I Guess Things Happen That Way”, etc.
- Johann Sebastian Bach – I could go on about what a genius craftsman he was, how his music is good for your brain & your soul. How I’ve recently discovered that I don’t have a recording of the Well-Tempered Clavier (CD – not iTunes, still a snob on classical)! Douglas Adams said it all for me: “Mozart tells us what it's like to be human, Beethoven tells us what it's like to be Beethoven and Bach tells us what it's like to be the universe.”
- Fresh vegetables and amberjack - preferably roasted on the grill by my lovely talented cousin Janice on a Saturday evening in Florida. My last Saturday night was pretty good.
